Vent Tool

After a tube is plugged, corrosion deposits or polymerized process fluids frequently seal the perforation or crack that led to the plugging.  The purpose of this tube venting tool is to create a positive opening in the tube before plugging to make sure that fluid is not encapsulated.  Taper plugs have been known to be ejected by the pressure of encapsulated fluid with sufficient force to injure personnel.   Positive venting will prevent such occurrences and fire, explosion or release of toxic or noxious materials to the atmosphere during retubing or plug removal.

Use the tool before plugging oil refinery, petrochemical, chemical and other process heat exchangers and for venting tubes in feedwater heaters.

Expansion Seal Technologies, a unit of the EST Group, Inc., produces and markets the tube venting tool (U. S. Patent No. 5,597,276) under license of  the patent holder, Stanley Yokell, president of MGT Inc.

As the photograph shows, the tube venting tool cuts a partial slot in the tube behind the tubesheet, but does not sever the tube.  In straight-tube units, the slot size can be adjusted to remove the minimum amount of metal that will ensure complete venting, but at the same time not prevent the tube from staying the tubesheet.
